Dr Gan is an Assistant Professor at College of Design and Engineering, National University of Singapore. He is currently the principal investigator of Robotics and Artificial Intelligence for Built Environment (RAIS4BE) Lab and serves as the Director of Centre for Digital Building Technology. He is a Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and a Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). Before joining NUS, he was a Research Assistant Professor at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and an academic visitor at Purdue University (US) and Imperial College London (UK). He was invited as a Guest Lecturer at University College London (UK).

Dr Gan’s research focuses on robotic scanning and building information modelling (BIM) technologies which converge on three interrelated areas: (i) autonomous 3D scanning including robotic mobile laser scan to maximise building geometric data accuracy and completeness; (ii) representation learning and semantic enrichment to enable high-precision Scan-to-BIM of buildings and infrastructures; and (iii) graph-based computational design optimisation of buildings and structural systems. He was listed among the World’s Top 2% Scientists by Stanford University / Elsevier (Career-long; Single-year 2023–2025). He has secured funding from National Research Foundation through AISG Programme, Land Transport Authority (through Land Transport Innovation Fund), Public Utilities Board (through Coastal Protection and Flood Management Research Programme), and served as the PI and Co-PI for S$3.6M+ research grants. He has published more than 90 papers in international journals including Automation in Construction, Computer-Aided Civil and Infrastructure Engineering, Applied Energy and Advanced Engineering Informatics, as well as in major conferences like International Symposium on Automation and Robotics in Construction and the International Conference on Computing in Civil Engineering. His work has been cited 5,000+ times with one being recognised as Highly Cited by Web of Science. His research has resulted in multiple invention disclosures, which have been deployed in the scanning of buildings and digitalisation of infrastructure, demonstrating research and translational impact. Dr Gan is dedicated to developing innovative pedagogy for teaching digital building technologies and has been recognised with College Teaching Excellence Award at NUS.
