Dr Gan is assistant professor at College of Design and Engineering, National University of Singapore. He is the principal investigator of Robotics and Artificial Intelligence for Built Environment (RAIS4BE) Lab and serves as the Director of Centre for Digital Building Technology. His research focuses on robotic scanning and building information modelling (BIM) technology which converges on three interrelated areas: (i) autonomous 3D scanning; (ii) Scan-to-BIM; and (iii) graph-based, bio-inspired generative design.

Dr Gan was listed among the World’s Top 2% Scientists by Stanford University / Elsevier (Career-long; Single-year 2023–2025). He has secured funding from National Research Foundation through AISG Programme, Land Transport Innovation Fund under Land Transport Authority, and served PI and Co-PI for S$2.8M+ in grants. He has published 82+ Scopus-indexed papers including Automation in Construction, Computer-Aided Civil and Infrastructure Engineering, Applied Energy and Advanced Engineering Informatics, as well as in major conferences like International Symposium on Automation and Robotics in Construction and the International Conference on Computing in Civil Engineering. His work has been cited 5,000+ times on Google Scholar, and his paper has been recognised as Highly Cited by Web of Science. His research has resulted in multiple invention disclosures, which have been deployed in the scanning and diagnosis of buildings and digitalisation of infrastructure, demonstrating research and translational impact. Dr Gan is dedicated to developing innovative pedagogy for teaching digital building technologies and has been recognised with College Teaching Excellence Award at NUS.
